my goals & approach:

  • Each child is unique in how they learn and process musical concepts. My goal is to challenge and encourage each student in different ways and at a pace that is appropriate for their abilities.

  • Playing the piano requires much discipline and focus. In fact, one of the keys to having a fun and enjoyable experience in playing piano is building and maintaining momentum As a student increases in their playing time, they will see tangible and significant improvement, and as they see their progress, that will cultivate increased motivation to want to play more!

  • Weekly lessons throughout the year are preferred as much as possible.

parental involvement

One of the top factors in whether or not a child is progressing consistently in their piano skills is parental involvement and support throughout the week, whether they are young children just starting out or older youth who have been playing for years.

  • A simple and very effective plan to get into a habit of regular practice (for both the children and the parents!) is to have a set time each day dedicated to practicing piano. Remember, a little bit of practice every day is always better than trying to cram in all of the practice time in several days! Please see my “Practicing Tips for Parents” resource for more ideas of how to support your child throughout the week.

  • Each week at the end of their lesson, the student will receive a printout which will include (1) a list of their pieces with instructions and notes on what to focus on as well as (2) a practice log to keep track of their daily practice. Please remember to bring this printout each week along with your child(ren)’s books!

  • It is common and normal for students to get “stuck” from time to time, whether due to an increasingly busy schedule or losing interest and motivation in playing. There are a number of strategies that I utilize to encourage the kids to continue to play; however, if there is ever a question of whether or not a child should continue in their piano playing, my goal is to work together with the parents to decide what is most beneficial for the child. That might entail taking a break or switching to another piano instructor with a different teaching approach that might be a better fit for them.

payment

  • Payment is due at the end of each lesson (Cash, check, or online banking transfers all work for me.)

  • Students must have regular access to an acoustic piano for daily practice.

  • I will email you links to books to purchase online (from Amazon or SheetMusicPlus).
